The IELTS exam is now available in both computer-based and paper-based formats. For those choosing paper-based IELTS, the Writing, Listening, and Reading sections are completed using paper with either pen or HB pencils. The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face or via video call with an examiner. Results for the paper-based test are typically released 13 days after the test date.

For those opting for computer-based IELTS, the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are taken on a computer. The Speaking test remains face-to-face or via video call with an examiner. Computer-based IELTS offers the flexibility to select from various test dates and times, with results usually available within 3-5 days

TEST TYPES

IELTS is widely recognized as the standard test for assessing English language proficiency globally. It is ideal for individuals aiming to utilize English in academic or professional contexts on an international scale.

For those intending to study, work, or migrate to the UK, taking the IELTS test approved by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) is mandatory. This version is specifically known as IELTS for UKVI.

Additionally, IELTS Life Skills is designed for individuals needing to demonstrate English speaking and listening abilities at various CEFR levels (A1, A2, or B1).

Both IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training) and IELTS Life Skills tests are accredited Secure English Language Tests (SELT) by the UK Home Office, essential for visa applications to the UK.

TEST SECTIONS

IELTS evaluates your English proficiency through four components: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The entire test duration is 2 hours and 45 minutes. For paper-based IELTS, the sequence is Writing, Listening, and Reading, all conducted on the same day without breaks. Conversely, computer-based IELTS follows the sequence of Listening, Reading, and Writing.

The Speaking test can be scheduled separately, either up to a week before or after the other three tests. Your test center will provide specific details about the date and time of your Speaking test.

Note for IELTS on Computer: The Speaking test can be scheduled within a period of 5 days prior to or after your Listening, Reading, and Writing (LRW) test date.

MODULES

IELTS offers two main test types: IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic.

  • IELTS Academic: This test type is designed for individuals who need to demonstrate English proficiency for academic purposes, typically for undergraduate or postgraduate study, or for professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
  • IELTS General Training: This test is suitable for candidates who require English language skills for purposes such as below-degree-level study, work experience, or migration to English-speaking countries like Australia, the UK, the USA, Canada, New Zealand, Ireland, and others.
